When a representative of King James II challenged the legitimacy of the Connecticut Charter and demanded its return in 1687, Joseph Wadsworth, it is said, hid it in what was to become known as The Charter Oak. Gone since 1856 neither the tree nor the tale is forgotten and The Charter Oak remains today an important place in the history of the Constitution State and our country.
